I second the person who said Bokura ga Ita (We Were There). Do you like bl? Cuz Given (no smut) ticks all your boxes. I also recommend Sand Chronicles and Oboreru Knife (Drowning Love).

The Rose of Versailles handled it well, especially in the manga. Nana also handles it well (except it does show SA too). I also believe Bokura ga ita had its moments too. But I agree with some of the comments that suggest checking out Josei. Paradise Kiss is good.

Air, Kanon, and Clannad are all really sad and all Key visual novel adaptations (and have a similar art style) Other sad shoujo: -Full Moon O Sagashite -Violet Evergarden -Hotarubi no Mori e (movie) -Banana Fish (Suprised this isnt Josei? It covers very serious topics but it's gut wrenching) -Fruits Basket -Bokura Ga Ita (I think I remember this was sad) Not shoujo/josei but still really sad: -Angel Beats -Ano Hana -Haibane Renmei -Chronos Crusade -Grave of the fireflies
