Astro Boy

r/shoujo · Recommends written by male mangaka’s

Princess Knight by Osamu Tezuka (same mangaka behind Astro Boy) is considered one of the first “serious” shoujo series. It’s also getting a new movie adaptation Ribbon Knight soon. Also Pretear and Kaleido Star were written by Junichi Sato (who also directed magical girl anime such as Sailor Moon, Princess Tutu, and Ojamajo Doremi).

Personal top 10 in no order: akira, berserk, astro boy, monster, showa: history of japan, dragon ball, one piece, sailor moon, dorohedoro, and homunculus

r/mangarecommendations · Recommendations of more mature manga

Naoki Urusawa is the master of properly mature mangas for adults, imo. In that he’s work isn’t just mature as in dark or violent, but in the story telling and visual aesthetics themselves. I’ve seen people mention Monster (which, yes, absolutely), but for you specifically I’d also check out Pluto; it’s an adult re-imagining of the child anime classic Astro Boy. Political and dark sci-fi thriller for adults.
